| | Haitians of Florida A photographic exhibit celebrating the Haitian community of Florida | | | “Haitians of Florida” is a photographic exhibit documenting the growing Haitian population in South Florida and their participation in South Florida daily life. Developed by Joe Bernadel, co-founder of Toussaint L’Ouverture High School for Arts and Social Justice (TLHS). “Haitians of Florida” is partially funded by a grant from the Palm Beach County Cultural Council to two Artists-in-Residence, Michiko Kurisu and Jerry Lower. Their work, and that of their high school photography students may be viewed at the exhibit’s current location, or in the online Gallery.
As envisioned by Bernadel, the “Haitians of Florida” photo exhibit is the inaugural event for a longer term visual anthropology project telling the Florida Haitian community story through increased artistic and cultural expressions. Determined to use photography in his quest for this cross cultural discourse, Bernadel hopes to “document and honor the presence and contributions of Haitian people in South Florida and to enhance their welfare through education, cultural enrichment, and economic opportunity.”
This exhibit also represents the third event of the Haiti International Museum of Art & Culture (HIMAC), a project of TLHS launched in 2002.
After its inaugural show at FAU, the “Haitians of Florida” exhibit will continue to evolve photographically & through multimedia. With the intention of making the “Haitians of Florida” project accessible to diverse communities, the exhibit will be on display at various locations throughout South Florida. |
